20-qubit quantum computer announced in Finland
In a significant stride advancing the Scandinavian quantum ecosystem, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, in collaboration with IQM Quantum Computers, has unveiled Finland’s second quantum computer, a groundbreaking 20-qubit superconductive device. The launch of this 20-qubit quantum computer underscores Finland’s commitment to quantum technology, further solidifying its position as a key player in the global quantum landscape. This development is an important milestone in Finland’s ambitious quantum computing roadmap.
The collaborative efforts of VTT and IQM not only pave the way for greater computational capabilities but also contribute to the European quantum ecosystem’s growth and competitiveness.
Towards a strong Nordic quantum ecosystem
Denmark has strong historical ties to our Nordic neighbors based on existing collaborations and partnerships across borders. A key priority for Danish Quantum Community is to contribute to the Nordic and Scandinavian quantum ecosystem to ensure that our region remains a leader in quantum research and quantum technology.
Both Finland and Sweden have invested into national quantum research programs. In Sweden, the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation has established the Wallenberg Center for Quantum Technology, a 12-year program supported by a SEK 1.5 billion investment with the aim of developing a high-end quantum computer. In Finland, the new 20-qubit computer marks an important step in the country’s effort to position itself as an important player in the global quantum industry.
The Nordics are also highlighted in Denmark’s National Strategy for Quantum Technology as a focus area for strategic collaborations in both industry and academia, and in particular as an area of interest for Denmark’s new International Quantum Hub.
