We are pleased to welcome Universal Quantum as a new partner of
the Danish Quantum Community (DQC).
Universal Quantum is a UK-based company developing scalable
quantum computers using trapped-ion technology. Its approach is built around a
modular architecture that integrates multiple quantum processing units, each
equipped with high-quality trapped-ion qubits, with a clear pathway to scaling
systems to millions of qubits.
The company was founded in 2018 as a spin-out from the University
of Sussex by Sebastian Weidt and Winfried Hensinger, both professors in the
field of quantum computing.
In 2022, Universal Quantum secured a €67 million contract from the
German Aerospace Center (DLR) to deliver fully scalable trapped-ion quantum
computers. The programme includes the development of a single-chip quantum
computer and an initial multi-chip system of up to 100 qubits, with the
long-term objective of scaling to much larger systems.
Universal Quantum leverages existing manufacturing technologies to
build the core components of its quantum computers, with systems designed for
integration into existing computing infrastructures. The company develops the
full quantum computing stack and works closely with partners across government,
industry, and academia to advance error-corrected quantum computing and to map real-world use cases.
On joining the Danish Quantum Community, Luc Gérardin, Global Head
of Business Development at Universal Quantum, said:
“We are delighted to join the Danish Quantum Community and to
engage more closely with Denmark’s vibrant quantum ecosystem. Collaboration
across research, industry, and public institutions is essential to turning
scalable quantum computing into a practical reality. We look forward to
contributing our experience in building utility-scale quantum systems and
exploring opportunities where quantum technology can deliver real-world
impact.”
At, DQC we are excited to welcome Universal Quantum and look forward to a strong and productive collaboration.
